Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People purchasing such drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs explains the heightened regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
